It looks like the writer-director tried to ride completely onAyushmann-Bhumi's chemistry and forgot to focus on the story. Theamount of responsibility that the topic of the movie demanded wasn'treally shown. Instead, what we get is a half-hearted effort on asensitive topic that even the lead pair's excellent performancecouldn't save.

Story (6/10): Mudit (Ayushmann Khurana) is in love with Sugandha (BhumiPadnekar) and somehow even manages to get his love marriage arranged ashe struggles to make the right moves at the girl - so the shortcut.Everything is going fine, except physically. Eventually, Mudit realizeshe has erectile dysfunction problem. However, it is too giganticproblem for an Indian male to share with anyone. The rest of the storyfocuses only on two things - 1) Tricks Mudit tries to solve the problem- from religious to medical - without any success and the frustrationafter every failed attempts, 2) Sugandha's efforts to make things workin spite of this and to make sure love doesn't lose in front ofphysical aspirations. The story focuses on the taboo in the Indiansociety around the erectile dysfunction as a genuine problem as thecharacter tries hard to ensure nobody comes to know about it. However, the irony is that he cannot explore solutions without discussing theproblem. One thing that the writers created amazingly well wasSugandha's character sketch of a strong girl who shows a lot ofpatience and commitment to resolve the problem but also keeps his(Mudit's) behavior in check whenever he is doing something wrong, without hurting him. Full marks to Bhumi Padnekar for capitalizing onit. Definitely to watch out for. However, the flow of the story goesoff track in the second half of the movie where it is basicallydirectionless. Role of the lead pair's parents have been weirdlyscripted and doesn't make any sense to the context of the story. Climaxwas totally screwed up with the poorly conceptualized and scripted(almost boring) scenes that didn't make any sense to the plot of themovie. The story fails in the end to get to a conclusion (let alone alogical one). The movie seems to be another example of how our writersand directors continue to struggle with the second half of the movies.

Acting (7/10): Except for the lead pair, the movie struggles in theacting department. Largely the culprit has been the script. AyushmannKhurana was marginally worse than Dumb Laga Ke Haisha or Vicky Donor.Bhumi Padnekar seems to have been improving with every movie and herfans would definitely love her performance in this one. The chemistryof the lead pair continues to be amazing as one will love to watch themtogether throughout the movie. The rest of the cast had very vaguecharacter to follow with no clear behavioral trait(s) defined. Lack ofany other big names, perhaps, also seems to have costed the movie bigtime.

Direction (5/10): R. S. Prasanna did very well in the first half of themovie where the flow and pacing of the movie was done perfectly well. The scenes were making sense. Some of the metaphors to the centralproblem, which we saw in the trailer as well, like the Parle-G analogywas really hilarious and innovative. However, the second half of themovie was totally lost in commotion. The seriousness with which thesensitive topic had to be dealt was missing. Comedy was unnecessarilyloud and cheap. The climax - the most important part of the second half- was poorly treated. Cameo of Jimmy Shergill was totally unnecessaryand his dialogues didn't make any sense.

Overall (6/10): It could have been much better effort to bring to fronta legitimate medical health problem that is unnecessarily considered ataboo. Execution, as much good in the first half, is totally out ofplace in the rest of the movie.

The film deals with what exactly is essential for a marriage to besuccessful. The answer is Sex...or to put it more sophisticatedly'Physical Compatibility'.

The girl, Sugandha, has been shown to be a very simple small town girlwith pretty orthodox parents – who sent her always to girl's school, girl's college and even in swimming classes for girls only. She has oneclose friend – who is of course a girl, with whom she shares herfeelings and other secrets.

In comes Mudit in her life who stalks her often but never approachesher. She also liked the attention she got from Mudit and wished that hewould come and confess his fondness for her. Mudit is very free withhis mother and tells her about his weakness for a girl – but he can'tapproach her. His mother suggests that he should directly send them amatrimonial invite to sort things out.

Sugandha is both happy but a bit upset too as she wanted a proper loveand courtship period and decides to go around and feel being loved tillthe time they get married. It is during this period that Mudit realizesthat he is unable to get turned on by Sugaandha. There is a lot ofpandemonium regarding this but eventually things are sorted out. Theyget married and after about 6 months or so, Mudit successfully'performs' on bed! Some scenes from the film: With only one day left toget married, Mudit takes Sugandha inside a room – right in front of allthe family members and relatives...afterwards, when Mudit comes out –he says that 'He had done it right' whereas Sugandha says – He hadfailed – maybe meaning to say that she had not been able to experiencethe climax of love making.....they say 80% of married Indian women havenot experienced this all important climax at all.....though how theconsensus is taken is not really known to me......and it is because ofthis reason that Indian women are frustrated and dissatisfied!! – thatwas quite a ridiculous scene btw.! Poor sugandha takes help of a pornfilm (Blue film) to learn the tricks of turning on men! Sad scene.Although it is seen and said also about males that it does not takethem much to get turned on – as they can get aroused by looking at adead image of a nude/ semi-nude model in glamour magazine.

Shocking truth revealed about Erectile Dysfunction by Mudit and hisex-girlfriend: In one scene, a slim girl, Mudit's ex girlfriend ormaybe a fling - who appears to be a game girl too – in the sense – thetypes who dive on bed with any male they meet – just as long as theyare rich or physically appealing or sexually virile or for whateverreason – claims that Mudit was very compatible with her and was notgoing through any such dysfunction. Mudit agrees that with the gamegirl – he was actually very virile and sexual performance was breezewith her! This means that this type of abnormality is more because thefemale is not physically attractive enough....phew! see this is what Ialways say – down with porn films and magazines! They make you form adifferent image of the opposite sex and the entire life goes wasted insearch of some sexy siren you have watched in some cheap blue film! ButMudit was quite an intelligent man! He was looking for a wife material– and in Sugandha, he saw a perfect match! All he had to do was somehowimpregnate her and after that, she would just take care of hishousehold, looking after his children and house and of course serve hisparents. That is why, although the slim ex-girlfriend (Slimy) was aninstant turn-on but Mudit went for Sugandha...for he knew that Slimywould turn into a 'Desperate Housewife' whose priority would be to beon the look out for young virile males in the locality to have sexwith...for such females children or serving in-laws etc. does notexist...many Saavdhan India and Crime Patrol episodes have shown suchkind of sex starved females! Any way, Mudit compromises on this onelacking quality of Sugandha – but the rest were perfectly fine – sober, simple, non-flirtatious, virgin female, unattractive (so that othermales don't view her lustily) – a good wife material.

OK. So a "new" topic has been discussed by this movie. Appreciate it.But that doesn't mean it's enough to make it worth a watch. It fallsway short of making an impact and comes out an underwhelming ordinarytale, that you should rather skip.

The performances by lead actors are very good. Specially Bhumi has comeout to be very mature and impressive. Ayushman too shows why he isstill regarded as one of the most talented actors in Bollywood. Thedialogue deliveries, facial expressionless, timing etc are on the mark. The small side jokes are funny enough to make audience laugh, that isfine. Also it feels heart warming to see actors from "YouTube" on bigscreen. Much to be applauded about this movie.

But... this movie suffers from missing(or weak)a central theme. Thereis severe absence of a solid "core" around which a movie should bemade. Yes the protagonist suffers from a small dysfunction, but itdoesn't cause a big conflict in the relationship he is about to havewith her future wife. In fact his future wife is shown to be verysupportive. The problem main actor suffers from isn't that serious thatit justifies a big feature film on it. A short film would have the bestthe treatment for such topic. Basically filmmakers have tried to make atrivial idea interesting, added some funny jokes but have clearlyfallen short by a long stretch. We as an audience need something moreconcrete.

Again Bollywood portrays lack of depth in it's products. Till the timethis improves it will be very hard for me to look forward to Hindimovies every Friday. I will rather download World cinema from torrents.
